Carl Benz is often credited as the inventor of the modern automobile, yet many people fail to remember that there were other people working on cars prior to him – Leonardo da Vinci being among them with his design for an autonomous self-propelled vehicle created in 1495 by himself!

But the first successful internal combustion engine wasn’t created until 1885, when Carl Benz released his Patent-Motorwagen. Based on a bicycle and using gasoline as fuel, this revolutionary automobile represented a true breakthrough in transportation history.

Rene Panhard and Emile Levassor saw this as an opportunity, and soon thereafter started designing and manufacturing cars that boasted far more advanced features than what was available before Benz came along.
